Monschau Castle

Monschau Castle, also known as the Monschauer Burg, is a medieval castle located on a hill above Monschau. The castle is an iconic symbol of the city and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

The origins of Monschau Castle date back to the 13th century, when it was built as a defensive fortress. It served as a residence for local rulers and as protection against attacks. Over the centuries, the castle has been rebuilt and expanded several times.

The castle consists of several buildings grouped around a courtyard. Since after World War I, a youth hostel has been located in the castle. As a result, touring the building is out of the question. But the castle has an imposing defense tower called the keep. This tower offers a panoramic view of Monschau and the surrounding countryside. This is definitely recommended!

There are also regular events and exhibitions held at Monschau Castle, such as medieval festivals, concerts and theater performances. These events add an extra dimension to the visit and bring the castle’s history to life.
